Matthew Chapter 5
Matthew chapter 5 begins the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus teaches His disciples and the gathered crowds about the character and righteousness of the kingdom of heaven. He opens with the Beatitudes, blessing the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, the pure in heart, peacemakers, and those who endure persecution for righteousness’ sake. Jesus calls His followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world, instructing them to live in a way that glorifies God.

Jesus explains that He did not come to destroy the Law and the Prophets but to fulfill them. He teaches that true righteousness goes beyond outward obedience and reaches the heart. Jesus warns against anger, lust, dishonesty, revenge, and hatred, calling His followers to reconciliation, purity, truthfulness, forgiveness, and love even toward enemies. The chapter emphasizes wholehearted obedience to God and concludes with the call to be perfect, as the heavenly Father is perfect.
