Matthew chapter 6 continues the Sermon on the Mount as Jesus teaches about sincere devotion to God rather than outward displays meant to impress others. He warns against practicing charity, prayer, and fasting for public recognition, emphasizing that God sees what is done in secret and rewards genuine faithfulness. Jesus gives His disciples a model for prayer, commonly known as the Lord’s Prayer, teaching them to honor God, seek His kingdom, ask for daily provision, forgiveness, and deliverance from evil.

Jesus also teaches about storing treasures in heaven rather than earthly wealth, explaining that a person’s heart follows what they value most. He warns that no one can serve both God and riches. The chapter concludes with Jesus encouraging His followers not to live in anxiety over food, clothing, or tomorrow, but to trust in God’s care and provision. He instructs them to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that their needs will be provided.
