King James Version

John • Chapter 20

1 But on the first of the Sabbaths, Mary Magdalene comes early, while it is still dark, to the tomb, and sees that the stone has been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she runs and comes to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and tells them: They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. 3 Then Peter went out and the other disciple, and they were going to the tomb. 4 And the two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And having bent down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. 6 Simon Peter comes therefore following him, and he entered into the tomb; and he sees the linen cloths lying. 7 And the towel that was on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but was wrapped together in one place. 8 Then the other disciple who had come first to the tomb also entered, and he saw and believed. 9 For they had not yet known the Scripture that it was necessary for him to rise from the dead. 10 The disciples went back to their own. 11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping. As she wept, she stooped down to look into the tomb. 12 And she sees two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus lay. 13 And they say to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She says to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him." 14 Saying these things, she turned back and saw Jesus standing, and she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" She, thinking that he was the gardener, said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him away." 16 Jesus says to her, "Mary." Turning, she says to him in Hebrew, "Rabboni" (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus says to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'" 18 Mary Magdalene comes announcing to the disciples that I have seen the Lord and these things he said to her. 19 On that evening of the first day of the week, with the doors closed where the disciples were because of the fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you." 20 And saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. Therefore, the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you; as the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22 And having said this, He breathed and said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven to them; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained. 24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 Therefore, the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails and put my finger into the mark of the nails and put my hand into his side, I will never believe." 26 And after eight days again the disciples were inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said: Peace be to you. 27 Then he says to Thomas: “Bring your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not become unfaithful but faithful.” 28 Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God." 29 Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." 30 Therefore, Jesus also performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 These things have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
