King James Version

John • Chapter 7

1 And after this, Jesus walked in Galilee, for he did not want to walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him. 2 And the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near. 3 Then his brothers said to him, "Depart from here and go to Judea, that your disciples may see the works that you are doing." 4 For no one does anything in secret and seeks to be in public; if you do these things, reveal yourself to the world. 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready." 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast; I am not going up to this feast because my time has not yet been fulfilled. 9 And having said these things, he remained in Galilee. 10 But when his brothers went up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly but as in secret. 11 So the Jews were seeking him at the festival and were saying, "Where is that one?" 12 And there was much murmuring about him among the crowds; some were saying that he is good, but others were saying: No, but he deceives the crowd. 13 No one, however, spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews. 14 Now, while the feast was in progress, Jesus went up to the temple and taught. 15 Therefore, the Jews were amazed, saying, "How does this man know letters, having never learned?" 16 Jesus answered them, saying, "My teaching is not mine, but belongs to the one who sent me." 17 If anyone wishes to do his will, he will know concerning the teaching whether it is from God or if I speak from myself. 18 The one who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true, and there is no injustice in him. 19 Moses did not give you the law? And none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me? 20 The crowd answered, "You have a demon; who seeks to kill you?" 21 Jesus answered and said to them, "I did one work and you all marvel." 22 For this reason, Moses gave you the circumcision—not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers—and on the Sabbath, you circumcise a man. 23 If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I made a whole man well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not judge by appearance, but judge with righteous judgment. 25 Therefore some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem were saying, "Isn't this the one they seek to kill?" 26 And behold, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing to him; do the rulers truly know that this is the Christ? 27 But we know where this one is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where he is from. 28 Jesus cried out in the temple teaching and saying, "And you know me and you know where I am from; I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you do not know." 29 I know him, that I am with him and he has sent me. 30 They were seeking to seize him, and no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Many from the crowd believed in him and said, "The Christ, when he comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?" 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd grumbling about him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent servants to arrest him. 33 Jesus said therefore, "A little while longer I am with you, and then I am going to him who sent me." 34 You will seek me and not find me, and where I am, you cannot come. 35 Then the Jews said to themselves, "Where is this man about to go that we will not find him? Is he going to the dispersion of the Greeks and teach the Greeks?" 36 Who is this word that He said: You will seek me and will not find me, and where I am, you are not able to come? 37 On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink." 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from his belly. 39 This he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. 40 Therefore, when the crowd heard these words, they said: This is truly the prophet. 41 Others were saying, "This is the Christ"; but some said, "Does the Christ come from Galilee?" 42 "Did not the Scripture say that from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was, the Christ comes?" 43 A division then occurred among the crowd because of him. 44 But some wanted to seize him, but no one laid hands on him. 45 Then the servants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" 46 The servants answered, "Never has a man spoken like this." 47 Then the Pharisees answered them: "Have you also been deceived?" 48 No one from the rulers believed in him or from the Pharisees. 49 But this crowd, which does not know the law, is accursed. 50 Nicodemus says to them, he who came to him before, being one of them. 51 Let not our law judge the man unless he first hears from him and knows what he is doing. 52 They answered and said to him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee." 53 And every man went unto his own house.
