King James Version
1 Kings • Chapter 11
1
And King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh, Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, and Hittite women.
2
From the nations that the Lord said to the children of Israel, "You shall not come among them, and they shall not come among you; indeed, they will turn your heart after their gods." Solomon clung to them in love.
3
And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned away his heart.
4
And it happened in the time of Solomon's old age that his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not whole with the Lord his God, like the heart of David his father.
5
And Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom, the abomination of the Ammonites.
6
And Solomon did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not fully follow the LORD as David his father had.
7
Then Solomon will build a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon.
8
And so he did for all the foreign women who were burning incense and sacrificing to their gods.
9
And the Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord God of Israel who had appeared to him twice.
10
And He commanded me concerning this matter, not to go after other gods and not to keep what the Lord commanded.
11
And the LORD said to Solomon, "Because this is what was with you and you did not keep my covenant and my statutes which I commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant."
12
But in your days I will not do it for the sake of David your father; I will tear it from your hand.
13
Only the entire kingdom I will not tear away; I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen.
14
And the LORD raised up an adversary against Solomon: Hadad the Edomite, of the royal line in Edom.
15
And it was when David was defeating Edom, when Joab the commander of the army went up to bury the slain, that he struck down every male in Edom.
16
For six months Joab and all Israel stayed there until they had cut off every male in Edom.
17
And Hadad fled, he and some Edomite men from the servants of his father, to come to Egypt, and Hadad was a young boy.
18
And they arose from Midian and came to Paran, and they took men with them from Paran, and they came to Egypt to Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he gave him a house and bread he said to him, and land he gave to him.
19
And Hadad found great favor in the eyes of Pharaoh, and he gave him a wife, the sister of his wife, the sister of Taphenes the great.
20
And she bore to him a sister, Tahpanhes, the one who stole his son, and Tahpanhes nursed him within the house of Pharaoh, and the theft was among the house of Pharaoh, in the midst of the sons of Pharaoh.
21
And Hadad heard in Egypt that David lay with his fathers, and that Joab, the commander of the army, had died; and Hadad said to Pharaoh, "Send me away, and I will go to my own land."
22
And Pharaoh said to him, "Why are you lacking with me, and behold, you seek to go to your land?" And he said, "No, but you will surely send me away."
23
And God raised up for him Satan, against Rezon son of Eliada, who had fled from Hadadezer king of Zobah.
24
And men gathered around me, and there was a captain of the band in the killing of David, and they went to Damascus and settled there, and they reigned in Damascus.
25
And Satan was against Israel all the days of Solomon, and the evil that Hadad stirred up in Israel, and he ruled over Aram.
26
And Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephrathite from Zeredah, and his mother's name was Zeruiah, a widow, had been a servant to Solomon, and he raised his hand against the king.
27
And this is the matter that King Solomon raised his hand: he built the wall, closed up the breach of the city of David, his father.
28
And the man Jeroboam, a mighty warrior, saw that the young man was doing work, and he appointed him over all the burden of the house of Joseph.
29
And it happened at that time that Jeroboam went out from Jerusalem and met him, Ahijah the Shilonite, the prophet, on the way; and he was wearing a new cloak, and they were alone in the field.
30
And Ahijah grasped the new cloak that was on me, and he tore it into twelve pieces.
31
And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Behold, I am tearing the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and I will give you ten tribes.
32
And the tribe of the one will be for him, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen from all the tribes of Israel.
33
Because they have forsaken Me and worshiped Ashtoreth, the god of the Sidonians, and Chemosh, the god of Moab, and Milcom, the god of the Ammonites, and have not walked in My ways to do what is right in My eyes and My statutes and My judgments like David their father.
34
And I will not take all the kingdom from his hand, because he is a prince; for my servant David, whom I chose, who obeyed my commandments and my statutes, all the days of his life.
35
And I will take the kingdom from the hand of his son and I will give it to you, the ten tribes.
36
And I will give to his son one tribe so that there will be a lamp for David my servant all the days before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for my name to be there.
37
And I will take you, and you will reign over all that your soul desires, and you will be king over Israel.
38
And it will be that if you listen to all that I command you, and walk in my ways, and do what is right in my eyes, to keep my statutes and my commandments as David my servant did, then I will be with you and I will build for you a faithful house as I built for David, and I will give to you Israel.
39
And I will answer the seed of David for this reason, but not all the days.
40
And Solomon sought to kill Jeroboam, and Jeroboam arose and fled from Egypt to Shishak king of Egypt, and he was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.
41
And the rest of the words of Solomon and all that he did and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the words of Solomon?
42
And the days that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel were forty years.
43
And Solomon slept with his fathers, and he was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.
