King James Version

Jeremiah • Chapter 23

1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, says the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning the shepherds who shepherd My people: You have scattered My flock and driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the LORD. 3 And I will gather the remnant of my flock from all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. 4 And I will raise up for them shepherds, and they will graze; and they shall no longer be afraid, nor be dismayed, and none shall be missing, says the Lord. 5 Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, and I will raise up for David a righteous branch, and a king will reign and act wisely and will do justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will dwell securely, and this is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteousness. 7 Therefore, behold, days are coming, declares the LORD, when they will no longer say, "As the LORD lives, who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt." 8 For as surely as the Lord lives, who has brought up and who has led the seed of the house of Israel from the land of the north and from all the lands where I had driven them, and they shall dwell on their own land. 9 My heart is broken within me; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man and like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and because of the words of His holiness. 10 For unfaithfulness has filled the land, for from the face of wrath the land mourns; the pastures of the wilderness are dried up, and their strength is not as before. 11 For even a prophet and even a priest have become unfaithful; even in/my house I have found their wickedness, declares the Lord. 12 Therefore their path will be like slippery places in the darkness; they will be driven and fall in it, for I will bring upon them evil, the year of their punishment, says the Lord. 13 And in the prophets of Samaria, I saw a horrible thing; they prophesied by Baal and led My people Israel astray. 14 In the prophets of Jerusalem, I saw a shocking thing: they commit adultery and walk in falsehood, and they strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns back from his wickedness; they have all become like Sodom, and the inhabitants like Gomorrah. 15 Therefore, thus says the Lord of Hosts concerning the prophets: Behold, I am feeding them with bitterness and giving them poisonous water to drink, for from the prophets of Jerusalem, corruption has gone out into all the land. 16 Thus says the Lord of Hosts: Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you; they are deceiving you with visions of their own hearts; they do not speak from the mouth of the Lord. 17 They say, "You will be safe," to those who despise the word of the Lord. But they say, "No disaster will come upon you," to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of their heart. 18 For who has stood in the council of the LORD and has seen and heard His word? Who has listened to His word and has heard? 19 Behold, the storm of the LORD has gone forth, and a tempest is raging upon the head of the wicked. 20 The LORD will not turn back until He has done and until He has established the plans of His heart; in the last days you will understand it clearly. 21 I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. 22 And if they stand in my council, and make my words heard to my people, and they turn them from their evil way and from the evil of their deeds. 23 "I am a God near, declares the Lord, and not a God far off." 24 "If a man hides in secret places, will I not see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord." 25 I heard what the prophets have spoken, who prophesy in My name, saying, "I have dreamed, I have dreamed." 26 How long will there be in the heart of the prophets false prophets and the prophets of deceit? 27 The thinkers aim to make My people forget My name in their dreams, as their ancestors forgot My name for Baal. 28 The prophet who has a dream, let him tell a dream; and he who has my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the straw to the wheat, says the Lord? 29 "Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that shatters the rock?" 30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, says the LORD, who steal My words, each one from his neighbor. 31 Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who take their tongues and speak. 32 Behold, I am against the prophets who prophesy lies in My name, and they tell their dreams and lead My people astray with their lies and their deception; I did not send them, nor did I command them, and they will not benefit this people at all, declares the Lord. 33 And if the people or the prophet or the priest asks you, saying, "What is the burden of the Lord?" you shall say to them, "What is the burden?" and I will forsake you, declares the Lord. 34 And the prophet and the priest and the people who say, "The burden of the Lord," I will punish that man and his house. 35 Thus you shall say, each man to his neighbor, and each man to his brother: What has Yahweh answered, and what has Yahweh spoken? 36 And the burden of the LORD you shall no longer remember, for the burden will be for a man, and you have turned the words of the living God, the LORD of hosts, our God. 37 Thus you shall say to the prophet: "What has the LORD answered you, and what has the LORD spoken?" 38 And if you say, "The burden of the LORD," then thus says the LORD: Because you say this word, "The burden of the LORD," I will send to you, saying, "You shall not say, 'The burden of the LORD.'" 39 Therefore, behold, I will forsake you and abandon you and the city which I gave to you and to your ancestors from before my face. 40 And I will put upon you a reproach of everlasting shame and everlasting humiliation that will not be forgotten.
