King James Version
Jeremiah • Chapter 35
1
The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, saying:
2
Go to the house of the chariots and speak to them, and bring them to the house of the LORD to one of the chambers, and you shall give them wine to drink.
3
And I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and all the house of the Rechabites.
4
And I brought them to the house of the Lord, to the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which is by the chamber of the officials, which is above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the threshold.
5
And I gave before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine and cups, and I said to them, "Drink wine."
6
And they said, "We will not drink wine, because Jonadab the son of Rekab, our father, commanded us, saying, 'You shall not drink wine, you and your sons forever.'"
7
And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall not plant a vineyard, and there shall not be for you, for you shall dwell in tents all the days of your life, that you may prolong your days upon the land which you are crossing over to dwell there.
8
And we heard the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father concerning all that he commanded us, to not drink wine all our days, we and our wives and our sons and our daughters.
9
And to not have daughters, houses for our dwelling, and vineyard and field and seed will not be for us.
10
And we sat in the tents, and we heard, and we did according to all that Yonadab our father commanded us.
11
And it happened when Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, went up to the land, and we said, "Come and let us go to Jerusalem from the face of the army of the Chaldeans and from the face of the army of Aram," and we settled in Jerusalem.
12
And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying...
13
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Go and say to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: 'Will you not receive instruction to listen to My words?' declares the LORD."
14
He established the words of Jehonadab the son of Rechab, who commanded his sons not to drink wine, and they have not drunk until this day because they listened to the command of their father; and I spoke to you early and spoke, but you did not listen to me.
15
And I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending, saying, "Return, please, every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and return to the land which I gave to you and to your fathers," and you did not incline your ear, and you did not listen to me.
16
For the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have fulfilled the command of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not listened to Me.
17
Therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I spoke against them, because I spoke to them and they did not listen, and I called to them but they did not answer.
18
And to the house of the Rechavites, Jeremiah said, “Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the command of Jonadab your father and kept all his commandments and have done according to all that he commanded you.”
19
Therefore, thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: A man shall not be cut off from Jonadab son of Rechab standing before Me all the days.
