King James Version

Isaiah • Chapter 23

1 A burden against Tyre: Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for it is laid waste, from the house, from the coming of the land of Chittim; it is revealed to them. 2 Silence, you inhabitants of the isle, merchants of Sidon, passing over the sea. 3 And in many waters, the seed of the black is a harvest of the river; and it became a trade of nations. 4 I am ashamed, Sidon, for the sea has said, “I am a fortress, the sea has said, ‘I have not labored, and I have not given birth, and I have not raised up young men; I have exalted maidens.’” 5 When they heard of Egypt, they trembled like the mention of a rock. 6 Cross over to Tarshish; they will wail, inhabitants of the coast. 7 This is for you a delight from ancient days, her feet will run from afar to dwell. 8 Who has counseled this against the rock of the mighty one, whose merchants are the honored ones of the earth? 9 The Lord of Hosts has counseled to profane the pride of all beauty, to humble all the honored ones of the earth. 10 Hebrew is your land like a river; the daughter of Tarshish, there is no more reason. 11 His hand was stretched out over the sea; he made kingdoms tremble. The Lord commanded against Canaan to destroy its strongholds. 12 And he said, "You shall not add to be overjoyed, O oppressed virgin of Sidon; rise up, pass through, for even there you will not find rest." 13 Behold, this is the land of the Chaldeans; this people did not exist; Assyria established her as a fortress; they set up camp in her courtyards; they stirred up her palaces for destruction. 14 Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for you are ruined. 15 And it will be in that day, and the fortress will be forgotten for seventy years, like the days of one king; at the end of seventy years, it will be to Tyre as the song of the harlot. 16 Take the harp, play it well in the forgotten city, so that you may be remembered. 17 And it shall be, at the end of seventy years, the Lord will visit Tyre, and she will return to her hire and will prostitute herself with all the kingdoms of the earth on the face of the ground. 18 And it will be a merchandise, and its price, a holy offering for Yahweh; it will not be stored up and will not be kept back, for it will be for those who dwell before Yahweh, to be a merchandise for food to satisfaction and to cover ancient debts.
