King James Version

Mark • Chapter 4

1 And again he began to teach by the sea. And a very large crowd gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and sat in the sea, and all the crowd was on the land by the sea. 2 And he taught them many things in parables and said to them in his teaching: 3 Listen. Behold, the sower went out to sow. 4 And it happened as he sowed, some fell by the way, and the birds came and ate it. 5 And another fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. 6 And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and because it did not have root, it withered away. 7 And another fell into the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. 8 And other seed fell into the good land, and it gave fruit rising and increasing, and it bore one thirty and one sixty and one hundred. 9 And he said, "Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear." 10 And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him the parables. 11 And he said to them, "To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those outside, everything happens in parables," 12 So that seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest perhaps they should turn and be forgiven to them. 13 And he says to them: Do you not understand this parable, and how will you know all the parables? 14 The sower sows the word. 15 These are those along the path where the word is sown, and when they hear, immediately the Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 And these are likewise the ones sown on the rocky places, who when they hear the word immediately receive it with joy, 17 And they have no root in themselves, but are temporary; then, when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they stumble. 18 And others are the ones sown among thorns; these are the ones who heard the word. 19 And the cares of this age and the deceit of riches and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 And these are the ones who were sown on the good ground, who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit: one thirtyfold, one sixtyfold, and one a hundredfold. 21 And he said to them, "Does the lamp come in order to be put under the basket or under the bed, not in order to be placed on the lampstand?" 22 For nothing is secret unless it is intended to be revealed, nor was anything made secret but that it might come to light. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear. 24 And he said to them: "See what you hear. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and more will be added to you." 25 For whoever has, will be given more; and whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. 26 And he said: The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the earth. 27 And he sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, how, he does not know. 28 The earth yields fruit by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the fruit has been given, immediately he sends the sickle, because the harvest has come. 30 And he said, “How shall we liken the kingdom of God, or in what parable shall we place it?” 31 Like a grain of mustard seed, which when sown upon the earth is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the earth— 32 And when it is sown, it rises and becomes greater than all the vegetables and makes large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell under its shade. 33 And he spoke to them many such parables as they were able to hear. 34 But without a parable he did not speak to them, and privately to his own disciples he explained everything. 35 And he says to them that day when evening had come: Let us go over to the other side. 36 And dismissing the crowd, they took him with them as he was in the boat, and other boats were with him. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was already filling. 38 And he himself was in the stern on the cushion sleeping; and they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" 39 And having been awakened, he rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Be silent, be still." And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said to them, "Why are you fearful? Do you still not have faith?" 41 And they were afraid with a great fear, and they said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"
