Mark • Chapter 5

1 And they came to the other side of the sea to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And as he went out of the boat, immediately a man met him from the tombs with an unclean spirit. 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs, and no one was able to bind him anymore with a chain. 4 For he had often been bound with chains and shackles, and he had torn apart the chains and crushed the shackles, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the tombs and in the mountains, crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 And seeing Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he says, "What do I have to do with you, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I implore you by God, do not torment me." 8 For he said to him: Come out, unclean spirit, from the man. 9 And he asked him, "What is your name?" And he said to him, "Legion is my name, for we are many." 10 And they urged him greatly not to send them out of the country. 11 And there was a great herd of pigs feeding there by the mountain. 12 And they begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them." 13 And he permitted them. And the unclean spirits, going out, entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep place into the sea, about two thousand, and they were drowned in the sea. 14 And those who were herding them fled and reported to the city and to the fields; and they came to see what had happened. 15 And they come to Jesus, and they see the demon-possessed man sitting, clothed and in his right mind, the one who had the legion, and they were afraid. 16 And those who saw it told them how it happened to the demon-possessed man and about the pigs. 17 And they began to urge him to depart from their region. 18 And when he got into the boat, the demon-possessed man urged him to be with him. 19 And he did not let him go, but said to him, "Go to your house to your own, and tell them all that the Lord has done for you and how he had mercy on you." 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and all marveled. 21 And after Jesus had crossed over again by boat, a large crowd gathered around him, and he was by the sea. 22 And one of the rulers of the synagogue, named Jairus, comes and, seeing him, falls at his feet. 23 And he urged him greatly, saying, "My daughter is at the point of death; come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed and live." 24 And he went away with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25 And a woman who had been in a flow of blood for twelve years. 26 And having suffered many things from many physicians and having spent all that she had and not being helped at all, but rather coming to worse, 27 Hearing about Jesus, she came up behind in the crowd and touched the hem of his garment. 28 For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be saved." 29 And immediately her fountain of blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was healed from her plague. 30 And immediately Jesus, knowing in himself that power had gone out from him, turned in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" 31 And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing against you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'" 32 And he was looking around to see who had done this. 33 But the woman, being afraid and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him all the truth. 34 But he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace, and be healed from your affliction." 35 While he was still speaking, people came from the ruler of the synagogue saying, "Your daughter has died; why do you still trouble the teacher?" 36 But Jesus, hearing the word spoken, said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe." 37 And he did not allow anyone to follow him except Peter and James and John, the brother of James. 38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and he sees a commotion and many weeping and wailing. 39 And when he entered, he said to them, "Why are you troubled and weeping? The child has not died but is sleeping." 40 And they laughed at him. But he expelled all and took the father of the child and the mother and those with him, and he entered where the child was. 41 And having taken the hand of the girl, he said to her, "Talitha cum," which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." 42 And immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years old. And they were immediately astonished with great astonishment. 43 And he strictly ordered them not to tell anyone about this, and said that she should be given something to eat.
