King James Version
Mark • Chapter 6
1
And he went out from there, and came to his own country, and his disciples followed him.
2
And when the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard were astonished, saying, Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom that has been given to him, and such mighty works are performed by his hands?
3
Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they stumbled over him.
4
And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and among his own relatives and in his own house.”
5
And He was not able to do any miracle there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
6
And he was amazed because of their unbelief. And he was going around the villages teaching.
7
And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.
8
And he commanded them not to take anything for the journey except a staff only, no bread, no bag, no money in their belts.
9
But wear sandals, and do not put on two tunics.
10
And he said to them, "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there."
11
And whoever does not receive you, nor hear you, going out from there shake off the dust that is under your feet as a testimony against them.
12
And going out, they proclaimed that they should repent.
13
And they cast out many demons, and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
14
And King Herod heard, for his name had become known, and they were saying that John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and for this reason the powers are working in him.
15
Others said that he is Elijah; others said that he is a prophet like one of the prophets.
16
And when Herod heard, he said: "John, whom I beheaded, this one has risen."
17
For Herod himself had sent and seized John and bound him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her.
18
For John was saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
19
But Herodias was enraged at him and wanted to kill him, and she could not.
20
For Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and he listened to him gladly.
21
And when a favorable day had come, Herod made a feast for his officials and the commanders and the leading men of Galilee.
22
And when the daughter of Herodias entered and danced, pleasing Herod and those reclining at the table, the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you."
23
And he swore to her, "Whatever you ask of me, I will give you up to half of my kingdom."
24
And going out, she said to her mother, "What should I ask for?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
25
And entering immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying: I want you to give me on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
26
And the king, having become distressed because of the oaths and those who were reclining, did not want to break it.
27
And immediately the king sent an executioner and ordered him to bring his head. And going, he beheaded him in the prison.
28
And he brought his head on a plate and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.
29
And when His disciples heard it, they came and took up His body and placed it in a tomb.
30
And the apostles gathered to Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught.
31
And he says to them, "Come you yourselves privately into a deserted place and rest a little." For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have the opportunity to eat.
32
And they departed by boat to a lonely place privately.
33
And I saw them going away, and many recognized them, and they came together on foot from all the cities and went ahead of them.
34
And going out, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things.
35
And after a long time had passed, his disciples came to him and said, "The place is desolate, and the hour is already very late."
36
Let them go, so that having departed to the surrounding fields and villages, they may buy for themselves what they will eat.
37
But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." And they said to him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?"
38
But he says to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they knew, they said, "Five, and two fish."
39
And he commanded them to arrange all the feasts upon the green grass.
40
And they fell in groups, one hundred and one fifty.
41
And having taken the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, blessed them, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them, and he divided the two fish among them all.
42
And all ate and were satisfied.
43
And they raised twelve baskets full of fragments and from the fish.
44
And there were five thousand men who ate the loaves.
45
And immediately he compelled his disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead to the other side towards Bethsaida, while he himself dismissed the crowd.
46
And having taken leave of them, he went up to the mountain to pray.
47
And when evening had come, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
48
And seeing them being tormented as they rowed, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them walking on the sea; and he intended to pass by them.
49
But seeing him walking on the sea, they thought that he was a ghost and cried out.
50
For they all saw him and were troubled. But he immediately spoke with them and said to them, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
51
And he went up to them into the boat, and the wind ceased. And they were greatly amazed in themselves.
52
For they did not understand about the loaves, but their heart was hardened.
53
And having crossed over onto the land, they came to Gennesaret and anchored.
54
And when they came out of the boat, immediately they recognized him.
55
They went around the whole region and began to carry on the beds those who were badly off wherever they heard that he was.
56
And wherever he entered into villages or cities or fields, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.
