King James Version
Joshua • Chapter 10
1
And it came to pass when my lord, righteous king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction, as he did to Jericho and its king, so he did to Ai and its king. And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard that Israel was near them, they were in their midst.
2
And they were very afraid because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai and all its men were mighty.
3
And my lord Adonizedek, king of Jerusalem, sent to them, to Hoham, king of Hebron, and to Piram, king of Jarmuth, and to Japhia, king of Lachish, and to Debir, king of Eglon, saying.
4
"Come up to me and help me, and we will strike Gibeon, for it has made peace with Joshua and the sons of Israel."
5
And they assembled and went up, five kings of the Amorites: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon; they and all their armies encamped at Gibeon and fought against it.
6
And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, "Do not relax your hand from your servants; come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country have gathered against us."
7
And Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor.
8
And the Lord said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hand; no man shall stand before you."
9
And Joshua came to them suddenly, all night he went up from Gilgal.
10
And the LORD thundered before Israel and struck them with a great blow at Gibeon, and He chased them along the way to Beth-horon, and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11
And as they were fleeing from before Israel, they were in the descent of Beth Horon, and the LORD threw down upon them large stones from heaven as far as Azekah, and many died, those who died by the hailstones were more than those whom the children of Israel killed with the sword.
12
Then Joshua spoke to the LORD on the day when the LORD delivered the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still in Gibeon, and moon, in the valley of Aijalon."
13
And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped until the nation avenged itself on its enemies. Is it not written in the Book of Jashar? And the sun stood still in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to go down for a whole day.
14
And there was not a day like it before or after, that the LORD listened to the voice of a man, for the LORD fought for Israel.
15
And Joshua and all Israel with him returned to the camp at Gilgal.
16
And five of these kings fled and hid in the cave at Makkedah.
17
And it was told to Joshua, saying, "Five kings have been found hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
18
And Joshua said, "Roll large stones to the mouth of the cave and set men over them to keep watch."
19
And you shall not stand; pursue after your enemies and you shall not let them come into their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand.
20
And it was when Joshua and the children of Israel finished striking them with a very great blow until they were destroyed, and the survivors escaped from them and came to the cities of the fortress.
21
And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makeda in peace; he did not let any of the children of Israel threaten any man.
22
And Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring out to me these five kings from the cave."
23
And they did so, and they brought to me the five kings of these cities from the cave: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24
And when they had brought out these kings to Joshua, Joshua called to all the men of Israel and said to the commanders of the men of war who went with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." And they came near and put their feet on their necks.
25
And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for thus the Lord will do to all your enemies whom you are fighting."
26
And Joshua struck them after that and killed them and hanged them on five trees, and they were hanging on the trees until evening.
27
And it came to pass, at the time of the coming of the sun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden, and they put large stones at the mouth of the cave until this very day.
28
And Joshua captured Makkedah on that day and struck it with the sword, and he utterly destroyed its king and every soul that was in it; he left no survivor, and he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29
And Joshua and all Israel with him passed from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.
30
And the LORD gave also her into the hand of Israel and her king, and he struck her with the sword, and every soul that was in her he did not leave in her a survivor, and he did to her as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31
And Joshua and all Israel with him passed from Libnah to Lachish, and they encamped against it and fought against it.
32
And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and they captured it on the second day, and they struck it with the edge of the sword and every soul that was in it, as all that he had done to Libnah.
33
Then Horam, king of Gezer, went up to help Lachish, and Joshua struck him and his people, leaving no survivor.
34
And Joshua and all Israel with him passed from Lachish to Eglon, and they encamped against it and fought against it.
35
And they captured her on that day and they struck her with the sword and every soul that was in her they devoted to destruction on that day, as they did to Lachish.
36
And Joshua rose up, and all Israel with him, from Eglon to Hebron, and they fought against it.
37
And they seized her, and they struck her with the edge of the sword, and her king, and all her cities, and all the souls that were in her; they did not leave a survivor, just as they had done to Eglon. And they utterly destroyed her and all the souls that were in her.
38
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, and spoke, and they fought against it.
39
And he captured her and her king and all her cities, and they struck them with the sword, and they devoted to destruction every soul that was in her; he did not leave a survivor, just as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir and her king and just as he had done to Libnah and her king.
40
And Joshua struck all the land, the hill country and the Negev and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left no survivor, and he devoted to destruction all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded.
41
And Joshua struck from Kadesh Barnea to Azah and all the land of Goshen and to Gibeon.
42
And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, for the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel.
43
And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
