King James Version

Joshua • Chapter 14

1 And these are the inheritances which the sons of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan, which were given to them by Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the sons of Israel. 2 By lot, their inheritance was as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine tribes and half the tribe. 3 For Moses gave a heritage of two and a half tribes from the other side of the Jordan, but to the Levites he did not give a heritage among them. 4 For the sons of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim, and they did not give a portion to the Levites in the land, except cities to dwell in and their open land for their livestock and for their possessions. 5 As the Lord commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did, and they divided the land. 6 And the sons of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that the Lord spoke to Moses, the man of God, concerning me and you in Kadesh Barnea." 7 I am forty years old today, when Moses, the servant of the Lord, sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I brought back word to him as it was in my heart. 8 And my brother who went up with me caused the heart of the people to melt, but I was filled with strength after the Lord my God. 9 And Moses swore on that day, saying, "If the land where your foot has walked will be for you as a heritage and for your children forever, for you have followed the LORD your God wholeheartedly." 10 Now behold, the Lord has kept me alive, as He said, these forty-five years since the Lord spoke this word to Moses while Israel wandered in the wilderness; and now behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. 11 I am still strong today, as I was on the day when Moses sent me; my strength is the same now for battle and to go out and come in. 12 And now give me this mountain that the Lord spoke of on that day, for you heard on that day that there are giants there and great cities with walls. Perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out, as the Lord has spoken. 13 And Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as a possession. 14 Therefore, Hebron has been for Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite as an inheritance to this day because he fully followed the Lord God of Israel. 15 And the name Hebron formerly was Kiriath Arba, the city of the great man among the giants, and the land was quiet from war.
