King James Version
Joshua • Chapter 5
1
And it came to pass when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the children of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them before the children of Israel.
2
At that time, the Lord said to Joshua, "Make for yourself sharp knives and circumcise the children of Israel a second time."
3
And Joshua made swords of rock and he cut off the foreskins of the sons of Israel at Gibeath Ha-Aralot.
4
And this is the word that Joshua instructed all the people who went out from Egypt, all the males, every man of war, died in the wilderness on the way as they were coming out from Egypt.
5
For they were circumcised, all the people who went out, and all the people who were born in the wilderness on the way as they came out of Egypt, had not been circumcised.
6
For forty years the children of Israel walked in the wilderness until all the men of war who went out of Egypt did not listen to the voice of the Lord, whom the Lord swore to them not to let them see the land which the Lord swore to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey.
7
And he established their sons beneath them; they were uncircumcised because they had not circumcised them along the way.
8
And it came to pass, when all the nation had finished to circumcise, and they sat in the camp until their healing.
9
And the Lord said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So he named the place Gilgal to this day.
10
And the sons of Israel camped at Gilgal and they observed the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening at the twilight of Jericho.
11
And they ate from the produce of the land on the day after the Passover, unleavened bread and roasted grain.
12
And the manna ceased on the next day after they had eaten of the produce of the land, and there was no more manna for the children of Israel, and they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year.
13
And it came to pass when Joshua was in Jericho that he lifted his eyes and saw, and behold, a man stood opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us or for our adversaries?"
14
And he said, "No, for I am the commander of the army of the LORD; now I have come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to him, "What does my lord say to his servant?"
15
And the commander of the army of the LORD said to Joshua, "Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
