King James Version
Joshua • Chapter 7
1
And the children of Israel acted unfaithfully regarding the devoted things, and Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things, and the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.
2
And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven, east of Bethel, and he said to them, saying, "Go up and scout the land." So the men went up and scouted Ai.
3
And they returned to Joshua and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up; only about two thousand or three thousand men may go up and strike Ai; do not send all the people there, for they are few."
4
And they ascended from the people there, three thousand men, and they fled before the men of Ai.
5
And the men of Ai struck them, about thirty-six men, and they chased them before the gate as far as the quarries, and they struck them in the descent, and the heart of the people melted, and it became like water.
6
And Joshua tore his garments and fell on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord until evening, and he and the elders of Israel put dust on their heads.
7
And Joshua said, "Alas, O Lord, why have you brought this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell on the other side of the Jordan!"
8
In me, my Lord, what shall I say after Israel has turned the back to my enemies?
9
And the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land will hear, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the earth, and what will you do for your great name?
10
And the LORD said to Joshua, "Get up! Why are you falling on your face?"
11
Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant that I commanded them, and they have also taken from the accursed thing, and they have also stolen, and they have also deceived, and they have also put it in their own vessels.
12
And the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies; their backs turned toward their enemies because they were under the ban. I will not continue to be with you if you do not destroy the ban from among you.
13
Get up, consecrate the people, and say to them, "Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'There is a ban in your midst, Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you remove the ban from among you.'"
14
And you shall draw near in the morning by your tribes, and the tribe which the Lord chooses shall draw near by families, and the family which the Lord chooses shall draw near by houses, and the house which the Lord chooses shall draw near by men.
15
And the thing that is captured in the ban shall be burned with fire, both it and all that belongs to it, because it has transgressed the covenant of the Lord and has acted wickedly in Israel.
16
And Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes, and the tribe of Judah was taken.
17
And he brought near the clan of Judah, and he captured the clan of the Zarhites, and he brought near the clan of the Zarhites to the men, and Zabdiel was captured.
18
And he brought his household near to the men, and Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.
19
And Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please give glory to the Lord God of Israel and give Him thanks, and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me."
20
And Achan answered Joshua and said, "Truly, I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this and this have I done."
21
And I saw in the spoil a good mantle of Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and one gold bar weighing fifty shekels; and I coveted them and took them, and behold, they were hidden in the earth within my tent, and the silver was under it.
22
And Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and behold, it was hidden in the tent, and the silver was underneath it.
23
And they took them from the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel, and they poured them out before the Lord.
24
And Joshua took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the mantle, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his ox, and his donkey, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that belonged to him, and all Israel with him, and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor.
25
And Joshua said, "What have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you today." And all Israel stoned him with stones and burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
26
And they erected a great heap of stones against me until this day, and the Lord turned away from his fierce anger; therefore, he called the name of that place the Valley of Achor until this day.
