King James Version
Joshua • Chapter 17
1
And the lot went to the tribe of Manasseh because he was the firstborn of Joseph, for Machir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, and he had Gilead and the Bashan.
2
And it was for the remaining sons of Manasseh according to their families, for the sons of Abiezer, and for the sons of Helek, and for the sons of Asriel, and for the sons of Shechem, and for the sons of Hepher, and for the sons of Shemida. These are the sons of Manasseh, the son of Joseph, for the male descendants according to their families.
3
And Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
4
And they approached to Elazar the priest and to Joshua son of Nun and to the princes, saying, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” And he gave it to them by the word of the Lord an inheritance among the relatives of their fathers.
5
And the ropes of Manasseh fell ten alone from the land of Gilead and Bashan which is across from the Jordan.
6
For the daughters of Manasseh inherited a portion among the sons, and the land of Gilead was for the remaining sons of Manasseh.
7
And the boundary of Manasseh was from Machmethath which is before Shechem, and the boundary went southward to the inhabitants of En Tappuah.
8
To Manasseh was the land of Tappuah, and Tappuah was at the border of Manasseh to the children of Ephraim.
9
And the border went down to the brook of Kanah southward, to the brook of the cities, these are to Ephraim within the cities of Manasseh, and the border of Manasseh was from the north to the brook, and its outgoings were at the sea.
10
The Negev belongs to Ephraim, and the north to Manasseh, and the sea is its border; and in Asher they will encounter from the north and in Issachar from the east.
11
And it was for Manasseh in Issachar and in Asher, at Beth-shan and its daughters, and in Ibliam and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Dor and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Ain Dor and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Taanach and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its daughters, the three of the nether regions.
12
And the sons of Manasseh could not conquer these cities, and the Canaanite agreed to dwell in that land.
13
And it was that the children of Israel grew strong, and they gave the Canaanite for tribute, but they did not drive him out.
14
And the sons of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me a single portion and one lot, when I am a numerous people, until now the Lord has blessed me?"
15
And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest country and clear a place for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”
16
And the sons of Joseph said, "We will not find for us the mountain and iron chariots in all the Canaanite that dwells in the land of the valley, which is in Beth Shan and her daughters and in the valley of Jezreel."
17
And Joshua said to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, "You are a numerous people and have great strength; you shall not have just one lot."
18
For there will be a mountain to you, for it is a forest, and He created it, and it will be to you your going out, for you will drive out the Canaanite, for he has iron chariots, for he is strong.
