1 Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah from Beersheba. 2 And Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3 And Jehoiada took for himself two wives, and he bore sons and daughters. 4 And it happened after that, Joash decided to repair the house of the Lord. 5 And he gathered the priests and the Levites and said to them, "Go out to the cities of Judah and gather from all Israel silver to strengthen the house of your God year by year, and you hasten to the matter, and the Levites did not hurry." 6 And the king called to Jehoiada the chief and said to him, "Why have you not demanded concerning the Levites to bring from Judah and from Jerusalem the contribution of Moses, the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation to Israel for the tent of meeting?" 7 For Athaliah, the wicked one, had broken into the house of God, and also all the sacred vessels of the house of the LORD they made for the Baals. 8 And the king said, "Let them make one ark and set it at the gate of the house of the Lord outside." 9 And they raised a voice in Judah and in Jerusalem to bring to the Lord the offering of Moses the servant of God for Israel in the wilderness. 10 And all the princes rejoiced, and all the people, and they brought and cast into the ark until it was filled. 11 And it happened at the time he would bring the Ark to the king's place by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much silver and the king's scribe came and the chief priest, and they cherished the Ark and they would carry it and they would return it to its place; thus they did from day to day and they gathered money in abundance. 12 And the king gave to those who did the work of the house of the Lord, and there were hired stonecutters and craftsmen to repair the house of the Lord, and also ironworkers and bronze workers to strengthen the house of the Lord. 13 And the workers of the work made the length rise for the work in their hands, and they established the house of God on its plan, and they strengthened it. 14 And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king, and Jehoiada made utensils for the house of the Lord, utensils for service, and bowls and cups, and vessels of gold and silver, and they were offering burnt offerings in the house of the Lord continually all the days of Jehoiada. 15 And Jehoiada grew old and was satisfied with days, and he died, a son of one hundred and thirty years at his death. 16 And they buried him in the city of David with the kings, because he did good in Israel and with God and with his house. 17 And after the death of Jehoiada, the leaders of Judah came and bowed down to the king; then the king listened to them. 18 And they forsook the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asheroth and the idols, and there was wrath against Judah and Jerusalem because of this guilt. 19 And He sent to them prophets to bring them back to the Lord, and they testified against them, but they did not listen. 20 And the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood upon the people and said to them, "Thus says God: Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD and cannot succeed? For you have forsaken the LORD, and he will forsake you." 21 And they bound themselves against me and they threw a stone at him by the command of the king in the courtyard of the house of the Lord. 22 And Joash the king did not remember the kindness that Jehoiada his father had done with him, and he killed his son; and as he was dying, he said, "The Lord see and avenge." 23 And it came to pass at the turn of the year that the army of Aram came up against me and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and they destroyed all the leaders of the people from among the people and all their plunder they sent to the king of Damascus. 24 For in the distress of men, the army of Aram came, and the LORD gave them a very great strength because they had forsaken the LORD, the God of their ancestors, and they made Joash judgments. 25 And when you walked away from him, because they abandoned him, many in battle were tied to me, my servants, in the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed, and he died, and they buried him in the city of David, and he was not buried in the tombs of the kings. 26 And these are the ones who are connected to me: Zavad, son of Shimeat the Ammonite, and Yehozavad, son of Shimrit the Moabite. 27 And my son, and the great man, the burden upon me, and the foundation of the house of God, behold, they are written on the teaching of the book of the kings, and Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
