1 And in the seventh year, Jehoiada strengthened himself and took the commanders of hundreds: Azariah son of Jeroham, and Ishmael son of Johanan, and Azariah son of Obed, and Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zichri with him in a covenant. 2 And they surrounded Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah and the heads of the fathers to Israel, and they came to Jerusalem. 3 And all the assembly made a covenant in the house of God with the king, and he said to them, "Here is the son of the king; he shall reign as the Lord spoke concerning the sons of David." 4 This is the matter that you shall do: the third from among you, in the coming of the Sabbath, for the priests and for the Levites, for the gatekeepers. 5 And the third in the house of the king and the third at the gate of the foundation, and all the people in the courtyards of the house of the Lord. 6 And let no one enter the house of the Lord except the priests and the Levite ministers; they shall come in, for they are holy. And all the people shall keep the watch of the Lord. 7 And the Levites surrounded the king, each with his weapons in his hand, and the one who comes into the house shall die, and they shall be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out. 8 And the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they took each man his men who came in on the Sabbath with those who went out on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed the divisions. 9 And Jehoiada the priest gave to the captains of hundreds the spears and the shields and the battle gear that belonged to King David, which were in the house of God. 10 And he made stand all the people, and man sent away his hand from the shoulder of the house on the right side to the shoulder of the house on the left side, to the altar and to the house around the king. 11 And they brought out the son of the king and they set upon him the crown and the testimony, and they anointed him, and Jehoiada and his sons said, "Long live the king!" 12 And Athaliah heard the voice of the people who were shouting and praising the king, and she went into the people at the house of the LORD. 13 And she saw, and behold, the king was standing by his pillar in the entrance, and the princes and the trumpets were with the king, and all the land’s people were rejoicing and blowing the trumpets, and the singers were with musical instruments and were announcing to praise, and Athaliah tore her garments and said, “Conspiracy! Conspiracy!” 14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the commanders of the hundreds, the captains of the army, and said to them, "Bring her out to the street, and whoever follows her shall be put to death with the sword, for the priest said, 'Do not put her to death in the house of the Lord.'" 15 And they placed hands on her, and she came into the entrance of the horse gate of the king's house, and they killed her there. 16 And Jehoiada made a covenant between him and all the people and between the king to be a people for the Lord. 17 And all the people came to the house of Baal and tore it down, and his altars they broke, and his images they smashed, and the priest of Baal they killed before the altars. 18 And Jehoiada set the responsibilities of the house of the LORD into the hands of the priests the Levites, whom David had assigned over the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings to the LORD as it is written in the law of Moses, with rejoicing and with song, by the hand of David. 19 And the gatekeepers stood at the gates of the house of the LORD, and no unclean thing shall enter in any matter. 20 And he took the commanders of the hundreds, and the mighty men, and the rulers of the people, and all the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD, and they came into the inner court of the king's house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom. 21 And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, and they killed Athaliah with the sword.
