1 Then Solomon said, "The LORD has said to dwell in darkness." 2 And I have built a house for you, a dwelling place for you to abide in forever. 3 And the king turned his face and blessed all the assembly of Israel, and all the assembly of Israel was standing. 4 And he said, "Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who spoke by my mouth to David my father and by his hand fulfilled, saying." 5 From the day that I brought out my people from the land of Egypt, I have not chosen a city from all the tribes of Israel to build a house that my name might be there, nor have I chosen a man to be a leader over my people Israel. 6 And I chose Jerusalem to be my name there, and I chose David to be over my people Israel. 7 And it was with the heart of David, my father, to build a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel. 8 And the Lord said to David, “Because it was in your heart to build a house for My name, you did well that it was in your heart.” 9 Only you shall not build the house, for your son who comes from your loins, he shall build the house for my name. 10 And the LORD established His word that He spoke, saying, "I will rise up after David, your father, and I will sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD has spoken, and I will build a house for the name of the LORD God of Israel." 11 And I will put there the ark that is the covenant of the LORD which He made with the children of Israel. 12 And he stood before the altar of the LORD in front of all the congregation of Israel and he spread out his hands. 13 For Solomon made a bronze basin, and he placed it in the midst of the courtyard; it was five cubits in length and five cubits in width, and three cubits in height, and he stood upon it and blessed his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and he spread out his hands toward heaven. 14 And the LORD God of Israel said, "There is no one like You, O God, in the heavens and on the earth, keeping the covenant and the steadfast love for Your servants who walk before You with all their heart." 15 Which you kept for your servant David, my father, what you spoke to him, and you spoke with your mouth and with your hand you fulfilled as this day. 16 And now, O Lord God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father that which you have spoken to him, saying, “There shall not be cut off for you a man from before me sitting on the throne of Israel, only if your sons keep their way to walk in my law as you have walked before me.” 17 And now, Yahweh, God of Israel, let your word be confirmed that you have spoken to your servant David. 18 For indeed, God sits the man on the earth; behold, the heavens and the heavens of the heavens cannot contain you, even though this house that I have built. 19 And you shall turn to the prayer of your servant, and to his plea, O Lord my God, to hear the cry and the prayer which your servant prays before you. 20 To be your eyes open to this house day and night to the place that you said to set your name there to hear the prayer that your servant will pray toward this place. 21 And you shall listen to the pleas of your servant and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place; and you shall hear from your dwelling place in heaven, and you shall listen and forgive. 22 If a man sins against his neighbor and swears an oath against him, and the oath comes before your altar in this house. 23 And you shall hear from heaven and do, and you shall judge your servants to return the wicked to give his way upon his head and to justify the righteous to give to him according to his righteousness. 24 If your people Israel are defeated before the enemy because they have sinned against you and they return and confess your name and pray and plead before you in this house. 25 And you will hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and restore them to the land that you gave to them and to their fathers. 26 When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you, and they pray toward this place and confess your name, and turn from their sin because you afflict them. 27 And you will hear from heaven and will forgive the sin of your servants and your people Israel, for they will turn to the good way in which they should walk, and you will give rain on your land that you have given to your people as an inheritance. 28 When there is a famine in the land, when there is a pestilence, when there is blight and locust and grasshopper, when their enemies besiege them in the land of their gates, every plague and every illness 29 All prayer, all supplication that will be for every person and for all your people Israel, who will know a man’s affliction and his pain, and will spread out his hands toward this house. 30 And you shall hear from the heavens, the place of Your dwelling, and forgive, and give to each man according to all his ways, as You know his heart; for You alone know the hearts of the children of mankind. 31 So that they may fear you, to walk in your ways all the days that they live upon the earth, which you gave to our ancestors. 32 And also to the foreigner who is not of your people Israel, he comes from a far country for the sake of your great name and your strong hand and your outstretched arm, and they will come and pray toward this house. 33 And you shall hear from heaven, from the dwelling of your holiness, and you shall do according to all that the foreigner calls to you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as your people Israel, and so that they may know that your name is proclaimed over this house which I have built. 34 When your people go out to battle against their enemies on the way that you send them, and they pray to you toward this city that you have chosen and the house that I have built for your name. 35 And you shall hear from the heavens their prayer and their supplication, and you shall do justice for them. 36 For they will sin against you, for there is no man who does not sin; and you will be angry with them and deliver them into the hand of an enemy, and they will take them captive to a distant or nearby land. 37 And they will return to their hearts in the land to which they were exiled, and they will turn back and plead with You in the land of their captivity, saying, "We have sinned, we have committed iniquity, and we have acted wickedly." 38 And they will return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and they will pray to you toward their land which you gave to their ancestors and the city which you chose, and the house that I built for your name. 39 And you shall hear from the heavens, from Your dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and you shall execute judgment for them and forgive Your people who have sinned against You. 40 Now, O God, may Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to the prayer of this place. 41 And now, arise, O Lord God, to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength; your priests, O Lord God, wear salvation, and your faithful rejoice in goodness. 42 O Lord God, do not turn away the face of Your anointed; remember the mercies of David Your servant.
