1 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, only not with a complete heart. 3 And it happened when the kingdom became strong against me, and he killed his servants who were striking the king, my father. 4 And their sons he did not kill, for it is written in the Torah in the book of Moses, which the LORD commanded to say: Parents shall not be put to death for children, and children shall not be put to death for parents; each shall be put to death for his own sin. 5 And Amaziah gathered Judah and appointed them for the fathers' houses, for the leaders of the thousands and for the leaders of the hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin, and he counted them from twenty years old and upward, and found them three hundred thousand young men going out to war, holding spear and shield. 6 And he hired from Israel one hundred thousand mighty warriors for one hundred talent of silver. 7 And a man of God came to me, saying, "The king shall not come with you, for the Lord is not with Israel, all the sons of Ephraim." 8 For if you come, be strong for battle; God will make you stumble before the enemy, for there is strength in God to help and to defeat. 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, "What should I do about the hundred talents that I gave to the troops of Israel?" And the man of God replied, "The Lord has much more to give you than this." 10 And Amaziah separated them for the troop that came to him from Ephraim to go to their place, and his anger burned greatly against Judah, and they returned to their place in fierce anger. 11 And Amaziah strengthened himself and led his people, and he went to the Valley of Salt and struck down ten thousand of the sons of Seir. 12 And ten thousand living men from the sons of Judah came to the head of the rock, and they threw them from the top of the rock, and all of them were broken. 13 And the sons of the division that Amaziah brought back from the battle, they raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon, and they struck down three thousand of them and took much plunder. 14 And it was after Amaziah came from striking the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the sons of Seir, and set them up for himself as gods, and before them he bowed down and burned incense to them. 15 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent to him a prophet, and he said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people who could not deliver their people from your hand?" 16 And it came to pass when he spoke to me, and he said to him, "The advisor to the king has given you counsel, cease from you; why should they strike you?" And the prophet ceased, and he said, "I knew that God had advised to destroy you because you have done this and did not listen to my counsel." 17 And Amatzyahu, king of Judah, advised and sent to Yoash, son of Yehoachaz, son of Yehu, king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet face to face." 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "The thistle that is in Lebanon sent to the cedar that is in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son as a wife,' and a wild beast that is in the field of Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle. 19 You said, "Behold, you have struck Edom, and your heart has been lifted up; now why will you provoke mischief so that you will fall, you and Judah with you?" 20 And Amaziah did not listen, because it was from God, in order that they might be given into hand, because they sought the gods of Edom. 21 And Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated before Israel, and every man fled to his tents. 23 And Joash, king of Israel, the son of Jehoahaz, captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, in Beth Shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and broke through the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Gate of the Corner, four hundred cubits. 24 And all the gold and the silver and all the vessels that are found in the house of God with the servant of Edom and the treasures of the house of the king and the sons of the servants, and he dwelt in Samaria. 25 And Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived after the death of Joash the son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years. 26 And the rest of the words of Amaziah, the first and the last, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 And at the time when Amaziah turned away from following the LORD, they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; and they sent after him to Lachish and killed him there. 28 And they carried him on the horses and buried him with his ancestors in the city of Judah.
