King James Version
Exodus • Chapter 22
1
If in the act of breaking in the thief is found and he is struck and dies, there is no bloodguilt for him.
2
If the sun has risen upon him with blood upon him, he shall repay; if he has no blood, he shall be sold for his theft.
3
If the theft is found in his hand, whether it be of an ox, a donkey, or a living sheep, he shall pay twofold.
4
If a man burns a field or vineyard and sends it into the city, or burns in another field, from the best of his field and from the best of his vineyard he shall repay.
5
When a fire goes out and finds thorns and consumes a standing grain or a field, the one who started the fire shall surely make restitution for the damage.
6
If a man gives to his neighbor money or goods to keep safe, and they are stolen from the house of that man, if the thief is found, he shall pay back double.
7
If the thief is not found, the owner of the house shall be brought before God to see if he laid his hand on his neighbor's property.
8
For every matter of transgression, whether concerning an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost thing about which one may say, “This is it,” the matter shall come before the gods; the one whom the gods condemn shall pay double to his neighbor.
9
If a man gives to his neighbor a donkey or an ox or a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is broken or is taken away, no one sees it.
10
The seventh year of the Lord shall be between the two of them if he has not laid a hand on his neighbor's work, and he shall take from his owner, and he shall not repay.
11
If a thief is caught stealing from him, he shall pay back to the owner.
12
If it is torn, he will bring a witness; the torn animal will not be paid for.
13
And if a man asks from his neighbor and an ox or a donkey is broken or dies, and there is no one with him, he shall surely pay.
14
If his master does not pay him, if he is a hired worker, he has come in with his wage.
15
If a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he must quickly pay her to be his wife.
16
If the father refuses to give her to him, he shall weigh out silver like the dowry for the virgins.
17
You shall not allow a sorceress to live.
18
Anyone who lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.
19
Anyone who sacrifices to gods shall be destroyed, except to the Lord alone.
20
And you shall not wrong a foreigner, and you shall not oppress him, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.
21
You shall not oppress any widow or orphan.
22
If you surely oppress him because if he cries out to me, I will surely hear his cry.
23
And my anger will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will be widows, and your children orphans.
24
If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, do not be like a lender to him; do not impose on him interest.
25
If you take in pledge the garment of your neighbor, you shall return it to him before the sun sets.
26
For it is a covering, it is his covering alone; it is his garment for his skin. In what will he lie down? And it shall be that if he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.
27
You shall not revile God, and a leader among your people you shall not curse.
28
You shall not delay in giving to me the firstborn of your sons.
29
Thus you shall do for your ox, for your sheep, seven days it shall be with its mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.
30
And you shall be holy men to me; and you shall not eat flesh torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.
31
And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat
any
flesh
that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.
