King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 13

1 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. 2 And many crowds gathered around him, so that he got into a boat and sat down, and all the crowd stood on the shore. 3 And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying: Behold, a sower went out to sow. 4 And while he was sowing, some fell by the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 But other [seeds] fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up because it did not have depth of soil. 6 When the sun had risen, it was scorched, and because it had no root, it withered away. 7 But others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8 But other seed fell on the good ground and yielded fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear. 10 And the disciples came to him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 But he answered and said to them, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given." 12 For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 For this reason, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled in them, saying: You will hear but will not understand, and seeing you will see but will not perceive. 15 For the heart of this people has grown dull, and with their ears they have heavily heard, and they have closed their eyes; lest perhaps they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them. 16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous people desired to see what you see and did not see it, and to hear what you hear and did not hear it. 18 You therefore hear the parable of the sower. 19 For everyone who hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart; this is the one sown beside the road. 20 But the one sown on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. 21 But he has no root in himself, but is temporary; and when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, he is immediately offended. 22 But the one sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 But the one who was sown on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it; he indeed bears fruit and produces, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 24 He put another parable before them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while the people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 But when the grass had grown and produced fruit, then the weeds also appeared. 27 And the servants of the householder came to him and said, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then does it have weeds?” 28 But he said to them, "An enemy has done this." The servants said to him, "Do you want us then to go and gather them?" 29 But he says, "No, lest gathering the weeds you root up the wheat with them." 30 Let both grow together until the harvest; and at the time of the harvest, I will say to the reapers: Gather first the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn. 31 Another parable He set before them, saying: The kingdom of the heavens is like a grain of mustard, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is greater than the plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches. 33 He spoke another parable to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened. 34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and without a parable he did not speak to them. 35 That what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, saying: I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation. 36 Then, having dismissed the crowds, he went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying: Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field. 37 And he answered and said: The one sowing the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 But the field is the world; the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one. 39 But the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all the scandals and those who practice lawlessness, 42 And they will cast them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear. 44 The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man, having found it, hid, and from his joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls. 46 Finding a valuable pearl, he went away and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea and gathering fish of every kind. 48 When it was fulfilled, having brought them up to the shore and sitting down, they gathered the good into containers, but threw the rotten outside. 49 Thus it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come out and separate the wicked from among the righteous. 50 And they will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 Did you understand all these things? They say to him, Yes. 52 But he said to them, "For this reason, every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old." 53 And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there. 54 And coming into his hometown, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said: Where did this man get this wisdom and these powers? 55 Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary, and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? From where then does he have all these things? 57 And they were being offended in him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his homeland and in his own house." 58 And he did not perform many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
