King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 6

1 Take heed not to perform your righteousness before men, to be seen by them; if not, you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you give to charity, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men; truly I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing. 4 That your charity may be in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you. 5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not babble like the Gentiles, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Therefore, do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. 9 Therefore you should pray like this: Our Father who is in the heavens, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. 14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive your offenses. 16 When you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, for they make their faces gloomy so that they may appear to people to be fasting. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face. 18 So that you do not appear to men fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light. 23 If your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth. 25 Therefore I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will wear; is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky that do not sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them; are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by worrying can add a single cubit to his stature? 28 And concerning clothing, why do you worry? Learn from the lilies of the field how they grow; they neither toil nor spin. 29 But I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. 30 If God clothes the grass of the field, which exists today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" 32 For all these things the nations seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself; sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
