King James Version

Numbers • Chapter 21

1 And the Canaanite king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Israel came by the way of the spies, and he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow to the Lord and said, "If You will truly give this people into my hand, I will devote their cities to destruction." 3 And the LORD heard the voice of Israel, and He gave the Canaanite, and He devoted them and their cities to destruction, and He called the name of the place Hormah. 4 And they journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people was short on the way. 5 And the people spoke to God and to Moses, "Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread and there is no water, and our souls loathe this worthless food." 6 And the Lord sent among the people the fiery serpents, and they bit the people, and many people of Israel died. 7 And the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned because we have spoken against the Lord; pray to the Lord to take away the serpent from us." And Moses prayed for the people. 8 And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a serpent for yourself and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten and sees it shall live." 9 And Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on the pole, and if the serpent had bitten any man, he looked at the bronze serpent and lived. 10 And the children of Israel journeyed and camped at Oboth. 11 And they set out from Oboth and camped at Iye Abarim in the wilderness which is opposite Moab, east of the sun. 12 From there they journeyed and camped by the stream Zared. 13 From there they traveled and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, coming out from the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore, it shall be said in the book of the battles of the Lord, "What he did at Suph and the brooks of Arnon." 15 And the riverbanks that were stretched to settle in the city and leaned to the border of Moab. 16 And from there is the well; it is the well that the LORD said to Moses, "Gather the people and I will give them water." 17 Then Israel will sing this song: "Spring up, O well." 18 In the well of the leaders, the nobles of the people dug, with the lawgiver's staff, and from the desert, a gift. 19 And from Mattanah to Nahalieel, and from Nahalieel to Bamoth. 20 And from the heights of the valley, which is in the field of Moab, at the head of the peak, and it overlooked the face of the wasteland. 21 And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying. 22 I will pass through your land; we will not turn aside into field or vineyard; we will not drink water from a well; we will go along the king's highway until we have passed your border. 23 And Sihon did not allow Israel to pass through his territory, and Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel in the wilderness, and he came to fight against Israel. 24 And Israel struck him with the sword and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, to the sons of Ammon, for the border of the sons of Ammon was strong. 25 And Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites in Heshbon and in all its daughters. 26 For Heshbon is the city of Sihon, king of the Amorites; and he fought against the king of Moab, the first, and took all his land from his hand to the Arnon. 27 Therefore, the proverbs will say, "Come, let us build a city and establish the city of Sihon." 28 For fire has gone out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it has consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the heights of the Arnon. 29 Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, a people of Chemosh; he has given his sons as fugitives and his daughters into captivity to the king of the Amorites, Sihon. 30 And we lost Heshbon to Dibon, and we reached Nophah, which is up to Meidba. 31 And Israel dwelled in the land of the Amorite. 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they captured its daughters, and he took possession of the Amorite that was there. 33 And they turned and went up the way of Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet them, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 34 And the LORD said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have given him and all his people and his land into your hand, and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who dwells in Heshbon." 35 And they struck him and his sons and all his people, so that not a survivor remained for him, and they took possession of his land.
