King James Version

Numbers • Chapter 27

1 Then the daughters of Zelophehad, son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh, son of Joseph, came forward. And these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. 2 And they stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the leaders of the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting, saying. 3 Our father died in the wilderness, and he was not among the congregation who gathered against the Lord in the company of Korah, for he died because of his sin, and he had no sons. 4 Why should the name of our father be cut off from his family because he has no son? Give us a possession among the brothers of our father. 5 And Moses brought the judgment before the Lord. 6 And the Lord said to Moses to say. 7 Indeed, the daughters of Zelophehad are speaking; you shall give them a possession of inheritance among the brothers of their father, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them. 8 And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, if a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter. 9 And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 And if he has no brothers, you shall give his inheritance to the brothers of his father. 11 And if there are no brothers to my father, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative who is close to me from his family, and he shall inherit it, and it shall be for the children of Israel a statute of justice, as the Lord commanded Moses. 12 And the Lord said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of the Abarim and see the land which I have given to the children of Israel." 13 And you shall see her, and you shall be gathered to your people; you also, as Aaron your brother was gathered. 14 When you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me in the eyes of them, those are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. 15 And Moses spoke to the LORD, saying. 16 The Lord will appoint a man over the congregation, the God of the spirits of all flesh. 17 Whoever goes out before them and whoever comes in before them and whoever brings them out and whoever brings them in, and the congregation of the Lord shall not be like sheep which have no shepherd. 18 And the Lord said to Moses, "Take for yourself Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and you shall lay your hand on him." 19 And you shall set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation and you shall command him in their sight. 20 And you shall place your glory upon me so that all the congregation of the children of Israel may hear. 21 And before Eleazar the priest he shall stand and inquire of him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD; at his word they shall go out and at his word they shall come in, he and all the children of Israel with him and all the congregation. 22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him, and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation. 23 And he laid his hands on me and commanded me as the Lord spoke by the hand of Moses.
