King James Version

Numbers • Chapter 31

1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying. 2 Vengeance shall be taken for the sons of Israel from the Midianites, after you are gathered to your people. 3 And Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Let men be chosen from among you for the army, and they shall be against Midian to execute the vengeance of the Lord upon Midian." 4 One thousand for each tribe, one thousand for each tribe, for all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the army. 5 And they delivered from the thousands of Israel a thousand for the tribe, twelve thousand armed men. 6 And Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe for the army, and Pinchas the son of Eleazar the priest to the army, and the holy vessels and the trumpets for the sound in his hand. 7 And they besieged Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and they killed every male. 8 And they killed the kings of Midian, besides those who were slain among them: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian; and they killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. 9 And the sons of Israel conquered the women of Midian and their children and all their livestock and all their possessions and all their army. 10 And all their cities in their settlements, and all their encampments, they burned with fire. 11 And they took all the spoil and all the captives among mankind and among the animals. 12 And they brought to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the children of Israel the captive and the plunder to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan near Jericho. 13 And Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds who came from the battle. 15 And Moses said to them, "You have kept alive every female." 16 Indeed, they were to the children of Israel because of the word of Balaam to betray against the Lord concerning the word of Peor, and the plague was among the congregation of the Lord. 17 And now, kill every male among the little ones, and every woman who knows a man by lying with a male shall be killed. 18 And all the children of the women who have not known a man shall live for you. 19 And you shall camp outside the camp for seven days; anyone who kills a person and anyone who touches a dead body shall be unclean on the third day and on the seventh day; you shall purify yourselves. 20 And every garment and every vessel of leather and every work of goats and every vessel of wood you shall cleanse. 21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the army who were going out to battle, "This is the statute of the law that the LORD commanded Moses." 22 But the gold and the silver and the bronze and the iron and the tin and the lead. 23 Everything that comes into fire you shall pass through fire, and it shall be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of separation. And everything that does not come into fire you shall pass through water. 24 And you shall wash your garments on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp. 25 And the Lord said to Moses to say. 26 Lift up the head of the captured person, whether of a human or of an animal, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers of the congregation. 27 And you shall divide the spoils between those who take part in the battle going out to the army and between all the congregation. 28 And you shall lift up a tribute to the Lord from the men of war who go out to the army, one person out of five hundred from the people and from the cattle and from the donkeys and from the sheep. 29 From the half you will take, and you shall give to Eleazar the priest the heave offering of the LORD. 30 Take one from every fifty of the children of Israel, from the people, from the cattle, from the donkeys, and from the sheep, from all the animals, and you shall give them to the Levites who keep charge of the tabernacle of the Lord. 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 32 And the plunder was the remainder of the spoil which the people of the army had plundered: sheep, six hundred thousand, and seventy thousand, and five thousand. 33 And in cattle two and seventy thousand. 34 And one hundred and sixty thousand. 35 And the soul of man from the women who did not know a male bed, all the souls were two and thirty thousand. 36 And the part that comes out in the army was three hundred thousand and thirty thousand and seven thousand and five hundred. 37 And the tax to the LORD from the flock was six hundred and seventy-five. 38 And the cattle were thirty-six thousand, and their tax to the Lord was two and seventy. 39 And thirty thousand and five hundred donkeys, and a tribute to the Lord of one and sixty. 40 And the soul of man was sixteen thousand, and from the offering to the Lord two and thirty souls. 41 And Moses gave the tribute of the offering of the Lord to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord commanded Moses. 42 And from the half of the children of Israel that Moses separated from the men of the armies. 43 And the half of the congregation was from the flock three hundred thousand and thirty thousand seven thousand and five hundred. 44 And in cattle, six and thirty thousand. 45 And there were thirty-five thousand donkeys. 46 And the soul of man is sixteen thousand. 47 And Moses took from half of the children of Israel one portion of the five hundred from the people and from the animals, and he gave them to the Levites, the keepers of the charge of the tabernacle of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 48 And the appointed leaders of the thousands of the army approached Moses, the leaders of the thousands and the leaders of the hundreds. 49 And they said to Moses, "Your servants will take a count of the heads of the men of war who are with us, and not a single one of us will be missing." 50 And we will bring the offering of the Lord, each man who has found a gold item, a bracelet, a ring, an earring, and a necklace, to atone for our souls before the Lord. 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all the vessels of work. 52 And all the gold of the offering that they lifted for the Lord was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels from the leaders of the thousands and from the leaders of the hundreds. 53 The men of the army plundered each man his own. 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders of the thousands and of the hundreds, and they brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the children of Israel before the LORD.
