King James Version
Numbers • Chapter 32
1
And there was very much livestock for the sons of Reuben and for the sons of Gad, and they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock.
2
And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben came to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the congregation, saying.
3
Atarot and Dibon and Jazar and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Sibmah and Nebo and Beon.
4
The land which the Lord struck before the congregation of Israel is a land of cattle, and your servants have livestock.
5
And they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession; do not make us cross over the Jordan."
6
And Moses said to the sons of Gad and to the sons of Reuben, "Your brothers will go to battle, and you shall dwell here."
7
And why do you provoke the heart of the children of Israel to cross over to the land which the Lord has given to them?
8
Thus did your fathers when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land.
9
And they ascended to the valley of Eshcol, and they saw the land, and they discouraged the hearts of the children of Israel from going into the land which the Lord had given them.
10
And the anger of the LORD was kindled on that day, and He swore, saying
11
If the men who come up from Egypt are twenty years old and above, they will not see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, for they have not fully followed me.
12
Except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they were fully devoted following the LORD.
13
And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and He caused them to wander in the wilderness for forty years, until all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord had finished.
14
And behold, you have risen under your fathers, a multitude of sinful men to add to provoke the anger of the Lord against Israel.
15
For if you turn back from following him and he will continue to let them rest in the wilderness and you will destroy this entire people.
16
And they approached me and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock and cities for our little ones."
17
And we will be strong before the children of Israel until if we are brought to our place and our children dwell in the fortified cities before the inhabitants of the land.
18
We will not return to our houses until the sons of Israel have inherited each his inheritance.
19
For we shall not inherit with them from across the Jordan and beyond, for our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan, to the east.
20
And Moses said to them, "If you will do this thing, if you will go before the Lord to war."
21
And every warrior shall cross before you the Jordan in the presence of the Lord until He has driven out your enemies from before you.
22
And the land shall be subdued before the Lord, and afterward you shall return and be clean before the Lord and from Israel, and this land shall be yours as a possession before the Lord.
23
And if you do not do this, behold, your sin is against the LORD, and know your sin that will find you.
24
Build cities for your children and fences for your sheep, and whatever goes out from your mouth you shall do.
25
And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben said to Moses, saying, "Your servants will do as my lord commands."
26
Our wives, our livestock, and all our animals will be there in the cities of Gilead.
27
And your servants will pass all the soldiers before the LORD for the battle as my lord has spoken.
28
And Moses commanded them, Elazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel.
29
And Moses said to them, "If the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben will cross over with you before the Lord for battle, and the land is subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession."
30
And if the armed men do not pass over with you, and they hold on to you in the land of Canaan.
31
And the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben answered, saying, "Whatever the Lord has spoken to your servants, so we will do."
32
We will pass over as armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, and with us a possession of our inheritance from across the Jordan.
33
And Moses gave to the sons of Gad, and to the sons of Reuben, and to half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities, in the territories of the cities of the land all around.
34
And the sons of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer.
35
And the crowns of Shofan and of Ya'zer and of Yagbehah.
36
And the house of Nimrah and the house of Haran, cities of fortress and the folds of sheep.
37
And the sons of Reuben built Heshbon and Elaiah and Kiriathaim.
38
And [they called] Nebo and Baal Meon by their names, and Sibmah; and they called by the names of the cities which they built.
39
And the sons of Machir, son of Manasseh, went to Gilead and captured it, and they dispossessed the Amorites who were in it.
40
And Moses gave the land of Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.
41
And Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and he called them the villages of Jair.
42
And Nobach went and captured Kenath and its daughters, and he called it Nobach by his name.
