King James Version

Proverbs • Chapter 20

1 The wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whoever is deceived by it is not wise. 2 The lion roars; the terror of the king causes the sinner to tremble. 3 The glory of a man is to cease from strife, but every fool will be quarrelsome. 4 The lazy man does not plow in the autumn; he will seek, and there is nothing. 5 Deep waters are counsel in the heart of a man, and a man of understanding will draw it out. 6 A great man is called a man of kindness, and a man of faithfulness, who can find? 7 He who walks in his integrity is blessed; his children are after him. 8 A king sitting on a throne of judgment disperses all evil in his eyes. 9 Who will say, "I have cleansed my heart; I am pure from my sin"? 10 Stone and stone, an ephah and an ephah, is an abomination to the Lord; even they are both. 11 Also by my deeds it will be recognized whether a youth is pure or whether his actions are upright. 12 The ear that hears and the eye that sees, the LORD has made them both. 13 Do not love sleep, lest you become poor; open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. 14 Evil, evil, the buyer will say, and he will go away; then he will boast. 15 There is gold and a multitude of pearls, and the vessels of preciousness are the lips of knowledge. 16 Take his garment, for he is a stranger, and for the sake of foreigner, he has become entangled. 17 A man is sweetened with a false bread, and afterwards his mouth will be filled with gravel. 18 Plans are established by counsel, and through strategies make war. 19 A gossip reveals secrets, but a trustworthy person keeps a matter hidden. 20 Cursed be the one who dishonors his father and mother; his lamp shall be extinguished in darkness. 21 A heritage from a confused beginning, and its end will not be blessed. 22 Do not say, "I will repay evil," wait for the LORD, and He will save you. 23 The abomination of the LORD are stone and stone, and false scales are not good. 24 From the LORD are the steps of a man, and what understanding does a man have of his way? 25 A snare for a man is to vow a sacred thing, and afterward to seek to break it. 26 A wise king winnows the wicked and drives them away. 27 The lamp of the Lord is the spirit of man, searching all the inner parts of the belly. 28 Kindness and truth will establish a king, and he will strengthen his throne through kindness. 29 The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair. 30 Wounds of a bruise shall be treated with oil, and blows of the belly.
