King James Version

Proverbs • Chapter 6

1 If you have made a pledge for your neighbor, you have struck your hands for a stranger. 2 You have been ensnared by the words of your mouth; you have been caught by the words of your mouth. 3 Do this then, my son, and you will be rescued, for you have come into the hand of your friend; go, humble yourself, and plead with your friend. 4 Do not give sleep to your eyes and slumber to your eyelids. 5 Behold, the one who escapes like a deer from the hand, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler. 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways and be wise. 7 That there is no commander, officer, or ruler. 8 She prepares in the summer her bread; she gathers in the harvest her food. 9 How long, O sluggard, will you lie down? When will you arise from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to lie down. 11 And you will come like one walking before you, and your lack will be like a man’s shield. 12 A man of Belial, a wicked man, goes with a crooked mouth. 13 He blinks with his eye, he motions with his feet, he speaks with his fingers. 14 He who plots evil in his heart sends out strife at all times. 15 Therefore, suddenly disaster will come upon him; a rupture will break out, and there is no remedy. 16 There are six things that the LORD hates, and seven are an abomination to Him. 17 Eyes raised, a tongue of falsehood, and hands shedding innocent blood. 18 A heart devises wicked thoughts; feet are quick to run to evil. 19 A deceitful breath causes false testimony and a messenger can separate between brothers. 20 Keep the commandment of your father and do not forsake the teaching of your mother. 21 Bind them upon your heart always; tie them upon your neck. 22 When you walk, He will lead you; when you lie down, He will watch over you, and when you awake, He will speak to you. 23 For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, and the way of life is the rebukes of discipline. 24 To keep you from the woman of evil, from the portion of a foreign tongue. 25 Do not covet her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelids. 26 For the sake of a promiscuous woman, one may come to a loaf of bread, but the wife of a man is a precious soul that one may ensnare. 27 Does a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? 28 If a man walks on coals, his feet will not be scorched. 29 Thus, the one who comes to his neighbor's wife shall not be innocent; all who touch her shall be guilty. 30 The thief will not be despised if he steals to fill his appetite because he is hungry. 31 And he will surely restore sevenfold all the wealth of his house. 32 The adulteress, lacking heart, destroys souls; he will do so. 33 A blow and disgrace will be found, and his reproach will not be wiped away. 34 For jealousy is the fury of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance. 35 He shall not show favor to any bribe, nor accept a gift, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise.
