King James Version
Deuteronomy • Chapter 1
1
These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness, in the Arabah, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Di Zahav.
2
Eleven days from Horeb by way of the mountain of Seir to Kadesh Barnea.
3
And it happened in the fortieth year, in the twelfth month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to all that the Lord had commanded him concerning them.
4
After the defeat of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who dwells in Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who dwells in Ashtaroth and in Edrei.
5
On the other side of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying:
6
The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain."
7
Turn and go to yourselves and come to the mountain of the Amorite and to all its neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the lowland and in the Negev and by the seashore, the land of the Canaanite and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.
8
See, I have given you the land; go and take possession of the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.
9
And I said to you at that time, saying, "I cannot bear you alone."
10
The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven.
11
The LORD, the God of your fathers, will add to you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you as He has promised you.
12
How can I bear your trouble, and your burden, and your strife?
13
Bring for yourselves wise and discerning men, known to your tribes, and I will place them as heads over you.
14
And you answered me and said, "Good is the word that you have spoken to do."
15
And I took the heads of your tribes, wise and known men, and I gave them as leaders over you, captains of thousands and captains of hundreds and captains of fifties and captains of tens and officers for your tribes.
16
And I will command your judges at that time, saying, "Hear between your brothers and judge righteously between a man and his brother and between his stranger."
17
You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of any person, for the judgment is God's. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.
18
And I will command you at that time concerning all the things that you shall do.
19
And we set out from Horeb and went through all the great and terrible wilderness that you saw, along the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.
20
And I said to you, you have come to the mountain of the Amorite, which the LORD our God is giving to us.
21
See, the Lord your God has given you the land; go up and take possession of it, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has told you. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed.
22
"And you all approached me and said, 'Let us send men ahead of us, and they shall explore for us the land and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up and the cities to which we shall come.'"
23
And it was good in my eyes, and I took from you twelve men, one man for each tribe.
24
And they turned and ascended the mountain and came to the brook Eshcol and they measured it.
25
And they took in their hand from the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and they spoke to us, saying, "The land which the LORD our God gives to us is good."
26
And you did not bring the offerings, and you provoked the mouth of the Lord your God.
27
And you complained in your tents and said, "Because of the hatred of the Lord, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us."
28
"How can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, 'A great and tall people are there, cities great and fortified up to heaven, and we also saw the sons of the giants there.'"
29
And I said to you, "Do not be afraid of them, and do not dread them."
30
The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes.
31
In the wilderness that you saw, which the Lord your God carried you as a man carries his son in all the way that you went until you came to this place.
32
And in this matter, you do not believe in the Lord your God.
33
The one who goes before you on the way to seek for you a place to rest, in the fire by night to show you the way in which you should go, and in a cloud by day.
34
And the LORD heard the voice of your words and was angry and swore, saying
35
If a man sees these people, this wicked generation, the good land that I swore to give to your fathers.
36
Except for Caleb son of Jephunneh, he will see it, and to him I will give the land which he walked on, and to his sons because he followed the Lord completely.
37
Even I was angry with you because of you, saying, "You also shall not come there."
38
Joshua ben Nun, who stands before you, he will come there; strengthen him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it.
39
And your children, whom you said will be a spoil, and those who do not know today good and evil, they shall come there, and I will give it to them, and they shall inherit it.
40
And you turn to yourselves and travel the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea.
41
And you answered and said to me, "We have sinned against the Lord; we will go up and fight, as all that the Lord our God has commanded us." And each man girded on his weapons of war, and we took to go up the mountain.
42
And the Lord said to me, "Say to them, 'You shall not go up and you shall not fight, for I am not in your midst, and you shall not be defeated before your enemies.'"
43
And I spoke to you, and you did not listen, and you rebelled against the word of the LORD, and you acted proudly and went up the mountain.
44
And the Amorite who dwells in the mountain came out to meet you and they pursued you as you did the things, and they struck you in Seir as far as Hormah.
45
And you returned and wept before the Lord, and the Lord did not listen to your voice and He did not incline His ear to you.
46
And you will dwell in Kadesh many days, like the days that you dwelt.
